Poker Player Chris Ferguson

Chris Ferguson is a professional poker player and a five time WSOP winner. Like many other great poker players, Chris is well above average, distinguishing himself through his intelligence. Born in 1963, he attended UCLA where he earned a Ph.D. in 1999 in the field of computer science. His father, Thomas Ferguson, teaches a course on game theory and theoretical probability. As we can imagine, Chris took the most out of his father’s course and put it into practice in the game of poker.

After completing his journey through the academic world, Chris Ferguson set his sights on the world of poker.                Being an amateur player since 1973, he started taking the game more seriously since 1993. Using knowledge of the game theory, he started playing at internet gambling sites as far back as 1994. In 2000 he managed to defeat TJ Cloutier and win his first main event, the 2000 World Series of Poker, earning himself his first bracelet. Since then, he has won another four bracelets, bringing it to a total of five, in various games of poker:

  • In 2000, he won his first bracelet by playing Seven Card Stud.
  • Also in 2000, he won his second bracelet in the No Limit Texas Hold ‘em Championship.
  • 2001 marked yet another victory, this time in a game of Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better.
  • After a “dry” year, he made a comeback in 2003 by winning two WSOP bracelets. The first one in another Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better, …
  • … and the second in ½ Limit Hold ‘em – ½ Seven Card Stud Tournament.

Chris Ferguson, nicknamed “Jesus”, due to his long hair, is also a well known online poker player, playing exclusively on Full Tilt Poker. He is also a member of “Team Full Tilt”, alongside thirteen poker legends such as Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Allen Cunningham, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Andy Bloch, Mike Matusow, Jennifer Harman, John Juanda, Phil Gordon, Erick Lindgren, Gus Hansen, Annette Obrestad and Erik Seidel.

Chris stands out in the croud, mainly because of his style (his signature black cowboy hat, long hair and duster), and adds a happier note to an otherwise intense game. His favorite poker players are Erik Seidel, Dan Harington, Mike Sexton and Daniel Negreanu.

On his website, www.chrisferguson.com, you can find articles written by the man himself, although he hasn’t updated them since 2007. In them, he teaches others from his own experience. And speaking of experience, in 2007 he started a challenge – starting with nothing ($0), he managed to earn $10,000 strictly by playing online poker on Full Tilt. He first started playing free-roll tournaments, and with the money he gained he stacked up higher and higher, ultimately reaching his goal. Now that’s bankroll management!

In the end, we leave you with a quote from Chris, demonstrating a little game theory in poker: “On any one given hand, it might be 99% luck and 1% skill. Over the course of a tournament, it might be 30% skill and 70% luck. Over the course of a month, maybe it’s 30% luck and 70% skill, and over the course of a year maybe it’s 90% skill and 10% luck.” Play at fulltiltpoker.com where Chris Ferguson also plays and get up to $600 free in welcome bonus.
